he story on these pages is remarkably long--a history that is well over 1000 years. The Dutton lineage has been traced back by many scholars, historians, and genealogists over time; thus, most of this data has been borrowed from them. Since, it is reported that some of my ancestors have been influential in changing the political maps of Europe, non-family histories have also been consulted.

.......This chronicle begins with the daring, adventurous Scandinavian sea rovers who loved and excelled at war and fighting. Rölf or Rollo, an exiled Viking nobleman, battled the weak, West Frank king, Charles the Simple. After a long and bitter struggle, neither could achieve a decisive victory, so in 911, they reached an agreement where Rollo was recognized as a legitimate ruler in Neustria, i.e., Normandy, and he agreed to protect the Seine and Paris from other marauding bands of robbers and raiders. Five generations later, the roaming Viking spirit, greed, and love of war and adventure spurred Rollo's great grandson, Duke William to conquer England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 changing his name to William the Conqueror and changing the course of English and, likely, world history.
.......Among those in the wake of William, came six of his young cousins, twenty years later, who were granted lands and titles in England by Hugh Lupus, the Earl of Chester. In 1086, Odard (aka Udard, Hodard, or Hudard) settled at Duntune (which was later contracted to Dutton). Odard was the first to be called de Dutton from the place where he resided. Over the ages the Duttons served as knights and sheriffs (non-heriditary office comparable to vicomte in Normandy (Douglas:296-8))
.......In the seventeenth century in England, Elinour Dutton, the sole Dutton heir, died. Thus, in 1665. the Cheshire Dutton line of 600 years ended the family of Dutton of Dutton. (Cope:28)
.......
Other Duttons, who possessed neither titles nor great estates, being younger branches, began a migration to America. (Cope:29) In 1630, John Dutton immigrated to New England where his descendants today are known as the Duttons of Massachusetts. (Dunton)
.......
In 1680, William Penn, a member of the Society of Friends, i.e., Quakers, asked King Charles II to repay an unpaid debt of $80,000 owed to his father by granting him wilderness land in America. This land, Pennsylvania (Penn's woods), was opened by Penn to Quakers who moved there by the thousands from all over Europe to escape religious persecution. In 1682, John Dutton, and his wife, Mary Darlington, immigrated to America under Penn's auspices settling at Aston Township, Chester County, on a 500 acre tract of land. Their descendants are known as the Duttons of Pennsylvania. (Cope:31-32)
........
From Cheshire, England, the family's roving, adventurous spirit has lead to pioneering across the whole breadth of America. Here is our 1000 plus years of history along with historical vignettes, pictures, and maps. Come meet the family.
